Adelaide hot water prices at a glance

There is no official price list for hot water work in Adelaide. The ranges below are our own 2026 planning bands in Australian dollars, for supply and installation in a typical house where the new unit goes in roughly the same spot as the old one. They are a guide only, to help you set a budget and sense-check a quote. An on-site quote is needed for a real price, and your job may fall outside these ranges.

Job What it usually involves 2026 guide (AUD, as a guide)
Repair Element, thermostat, thermocouple, valve or similar on an existing unit $200 to $800
Electric storage replacement Where permitted under SA rules; tank, valves, removal of old unit $1,300 to $2,800
Gas storage or continuous flow Unit, valves, gas connection and commissioning, removal of old unit $1,800 to $4,200
Heat pump Unit, base, valves, electrical connection; before incentives $3,500 to $6,500
Solar with gas or electric boost Collectors, tank, booster, roof work; before incentives $4,500 to $9,000

Incentives such as federal small-scale technology certificates can reduce the heat pump and solar figures. Their value changes, so they are not deducted above.

What pushes the price up

  • A change of fuel or position. Moving from electric to gas means a gas line, possibly a meter upgrade. Moving the unit means new pipe runs.
  • Gas supply limits. A continuous flow unit may need a bigger meter or pipe than the old storage tank did.
  • Electrical work. A new circuit, a power point for a continuous flow unit or switchboard changes are separate costs.
  • Hard access. Roof spaces, upper floors, narrow side passages and units inside cupboards all take longer.
  • Roof work for solar. Frames, structural checks and repairs to tiles or iron add cost.
  • Larger capacity or premium models. Bigger tanks, higher flow rates and quieter or cold-rated heat pumps cost more.
  • Urgency. After-hours or same-day work can cost more than a booked job.

What brings it down

  • A like-for-like swap in the same position.
  • Good access and an existing base or mounting.
  • Incentives applied to eligible heat pumps and solar systems.
  • Repair rather than replacement, when the tank is sound.
  • Flexibility on timing, so the job can be scheduled.

Comparing quotes properly

A cheaper quote is not always better value. Line two quotes up and check each one shows:

  1. The exact brand, model and size or flow rate.
  2. Every valve and fitting, including the tempering valve.
  3. Any gas, electrical or structural work.
  4. Removal and disposal of the old unit.
  5. Incentives applied, each on its own line.
  6. Warranty terms for the unit and for the workmanship.
  7. A certificate of compliance on completion.

If one quote leaves out an item the other includes, ask about it before deciding. Missing items have a way of turning up later as extras.

Running costs matter too

The purchase price is only part of the story. A standard electric tank on a general tariff is usually the most expensive way to heat water day to day. Heat pumps, gas units and solar systems typically cost more to buy but less to run. Over the life of a system, the running cost can outweigh the difference in purchase price. Ask the contractor for an estimate of running costs with each option, based on your household and tariff.

About these figures

These are planning ranges based on typical residential jobs, prepared for this guide in 2026. They are not quotes and are not an offer from any contractor. Prices vary with the unit chosen, the property and the market at the time. Always get a written, itemised quote after an inspection before you commit.

Common questions

Before you book: the usual questions

Why are two hot water quotes so different?

Usually because they are not pricing the same job. One may include the tempering valve, a gas pipe upgrade, removal of the old unit and incentives applied, while the other leaves some of those out or quotes a smaller or lower-rated unit. Line the quotes up item by item.

Do incentives reduce the price of a heat pump or solar system?

Often. Eligible systems can create federal small-scale technology certificates, which installers usually apply as a discount, and South Australia's Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme has supported discounted upgrades through retailers. Values change, so ask for each incentive as its own line on the quote.

Is the quote free?

Yes. Quotes arranged through us are free and you are under no obligation to accept them.

Will an urgent replacement cost more?

It can, if it involves after-hours labour or taking whatever unit is in stock. If your system is still working, planning ahead gives you time to compare options and prices.

Why might a like-for-like electric replacement cost more than I expected?

In many existing South Australian homes, the water heater requirements mean a failed electric tank must be replaced with a heat pump, suitable gas unit or solar system, which usually costs more upfront than a plain electric tank, though often less to run.
