Which kind of system is it?
Hot water across Adelaide, without the guesswork
Adelaide Hot Water Solutions is a referral service for hot water work in Adelaide homes. When you call (08) 7100 9072, we pass your details to an independent local plumber or gasfitter who handles hot water system repairs, replacements and new installations in your area. They look at the job, give you a written price, and if you go ahead, they do the work. The quote is free and there is no obligation.
The calls we get tend to fall into three groups. Something has failed and there is no hot water today. Something is leaking — the tank, a relief valve line, a fitting. Or the system is getting on in years and the household wants to plan a change rather than be rushed into one on a cold morning. Each calls for a slightly different conversation, so the more you can tell us about the brand, age and position of the unit, the quicker the right person can help.
What makes Adelaide hot water a little different
The rules on electric replacements. South Australia is one of the states that limits when a standard electric storage heater can be fitted in an existing home. In many houses a failed electric tank has to be replaced with a lower-emission option — gas, heat pump or solar — unless an exemption applies. It is the single most common surprise in an Adelaide hot water quote, so we would rather you hear about it now than from the person standing in your laundry.
Hard summers, cool winters. A long run of 40-degree days is easy on a heat pump and a solar collector; a frosty July morning in the Hills is not. That matters for anyone weighing a heat pump in Mount Barker against one on the plains, and it is why sizing and placement deserve more than a guess.
Older homes with history. Bluestone villas, 1950s and 60s Housing Trust homes, cream-brick 1970s houses and new estates all sit within a short drive of each other. Each era brings its own pipework, meter positions and laundry layouts, and that affects how simple a swap really is.
Water quality. Mineral build-up around valves and inside tanks is something plumbers see across Adelaide. Ask whether the anode should be checked or replaced on a storage tank — it is a small part that can make a big difference to how long the tank lasts.
Repair or replace?
Not every cold shower means a new heater. A tripped circuit, a failed element or thermostat, a worn thermocouple on a gas pilot or a sticking tempering valve can often be fixed for a fraction of the cost of a new unit. If the tank itself is leaking, though, it cannot be repaired, and the conversation moves to what goes in its place. See our page on hot water systems repair for the usual faults and what a fair diagnosis looks like.
If you are choosing a replacement, the gas vs heat pump vs solar guide compares running costs and the incentives worth checking, and the Adelaide price guide gives 2026 planning bands for each kind of system.

Local pages and lines
Four parts of Adelaide have a page of their own, with notes on the homes, the council and the things that change a hot water job there. Each has its own phone line, listed on that page.
What a good hot water job looks like
- Find the fault first
- A cold tap can be a tripped breaker, a worn thermostat or a failed thermocouple. Those get checked and priced before a replacement is put on the table.
- Check the paperwork
- In South Australia plumbing and gas work must be done by people licensed for it. We ask the contractors we work with to hold the licences and insurance the job needs — ask to see them before work starts.
- The SA rules, upfront
- South Australia limits when a plain electric storage heater can go into an existing home. The contractor should check what applies to your house before quoting, not after.
- A quote you can compare
- Brand, model, litres or flow rate, energy rating, valves, removal of the old unit and any incentive applied — each on its own line.

Before you book: the usual questions
How long should a hot water system last in Adelaide?
There is no set figure. Storage tanks commonly give somewhere between about eight and fifteen years, and the spread depends on water quality, whether the sacrificial anode was ever checked, the thermostat setting and how hard the household uses it. The manufacture date on the unit's data plate is the best place to start when weighing repair against replacement.
Can I replace my electric hot water system with another electric one in South Australia?
Not always. South Australia has had water heater requirements for existing homes since 2008 that, in many cases, call for a low-emission system such as gas, heat pump or solar instead of a standard electric storage heater. Whether an exemption applies depends on things like whether mains gas is available and the type of dwelling. The Office of the Technical Regulator publishes the current requirements, and the plumber should check them before quoting.
Who is allowed to install a hot water system in SA?
Water heater installation is plumbing work, and connecting a gas unit is gas fitting work. Both need the right licence in South Australia, issued through Consumer and Business Services. We ask the contractors we work with to hold the licences and insurance the job needs — ask to see them before work starts, and ask for the certificate of compliance when the job is done.
Is a quote free?
Yes. The quote arranged through us costs nothing and you are not obliged to accept it. If a contractor charges a call-out or diagnostic fee for a repair visit, they should tell you before they come.
Are there rebates for heat pumps and solar in Adelaide?
There have been, from more than one source. Federal small-scale technology certificates have reduced the upfront price of eligible heat pump and solar systems, and the South Australian Government's Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme has supported discounted upgrades through energy retailers. Eligibility and values change, so check the current position with the Clean Energy Regulator and the SA Government, and ask for any discount to appear as its own line on the quote.
